Watts Family Session | Dallas Arboretum

There’s something really special about getting to see a family again—not in the same season, but in a completely new one.

The last time I saw this sweet boy, he was tiny. Sleepy. Curled up like most newborns are, barely aware of the big world around him.

And this time?

We met at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden… and he was on the move.

From Newborn to Nonstop: A Full-Circle Family Session

It’s hard to put into words what it feels like to watch a baby you once photographed as a newborn turn into a lively, curious 18-month-old.

There’s no easing into it.

One minute you’re remembering how small they were… and the next, you’re chasing giggles down garden paths and laughing right alongside them.

This session was full of energy in the best way.

He ran, explored, pointed at everything, and had absolutely no interest in sitting still for long (which, honestly, is exactly how it should be at this age).

And instead of trying to slow him down…

We leaned in.

A Toddler-Led Session at the Dallas Arboretum

The beauty of a place like the Dallas Arboretum is that it gives toddlers room to be exactly who they are.

Open pathways.
Colorful gardens.
So many little things to discover.

For a lively 18-month-old, it’s basically the perfect playground—and for a family session, it creates the kind of natural interaction you just can’t force.

We didn’t follow a strict plan.

We followed him.

Where he walked, we went.
What caught his attention, we explored.
When he laughed, we captured it.

And somewhere in all that movement, the most genuine moments started to unfold.

The Magic of This Stage (Even When It Feels Chaotic)

If you’ve ever been in the toddler stage, you know—it’s not calm, quiet, or predictable.

It’s busy.
It’s fast.
It’s full of emotion and personality.

But it’s also incredibly rich.

The way they reach for your hand and then pull away to explore.
The way they look back just to make sure you’re still there.
The way their laughter comes so freely, without overthinking anything.

That’s what this session captured.

Not perfection—but personality.

Why These “In-Between” Seasons Matter Most

It’s easy to prioritize big milestones—newborn photos, birthdays, major transitions.

But sessions like this one? They hold a different kind of value.

Because 18 months is a blink.

It’s a season that changes almost as quickly as it arrives.

And when you haven’t seen a family since those early newborn days, it makes this stage feel even more significant. You’re not just documenting what they look like now—you’re telling a fuller story of who they’re becoming.

Letting Go of Expectations (and Getting Something Better)

There were no perfectly posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera moments for long.

And that’s okay.

Because what we got instead was so much better:

Real laughter.
Movement.
Connection.

Parents scooping him up mid-run.
Little hands reaching out.
Moments that felt spontaneous and completely unfiltered.

Those are the images that take you back—not just to how it looked, but to how it felt to be in this season.
